Twenty-four-year-old Sara Ouellette of Presque Isle was traveling north in her 2010 Hyundai shortly before 10 a.m., when she saw a bear in a field, according to Corporal Chuck Michaud. Ouellette attempted to make a U-turn to take a photo of the animal.

At the same time, 21-year-old Brittany Drost of Bridgewater was traveling behind Ouellette in a 2013 Chevrolet sedan. Drost attempted to avoid the crash as the other car turned in front of her, but was unable to so. The two vehicles ended up in the middle of Route 1, Michaud said.

Crown Ambulance responded to evaluate Drost, but she was not transported to the hospital. Ouellette was not injured. Michaud’s investigation noted that both women were wearing seat belts.

The cars were towed from the scene. The Maine Department of Transportation also responded to remove debris from the roadway.

Ouellette was issued a citation for failure to yield.
