On Wednesday, the Caribou Police Department received complaints from multiple businesses that had taken in what appeared to be counterfeit $20, $50 and $100 bills. One business reported that the individuals who passed the bills were still in the store, according to information released Friday by Caribou Police Chief Michael Gahagan.

Officers investigating the complaint determined that 34-year-old Shelly Butler and 29-year-old Joshua Brydon, both of Woodland, had allegedly passed the phony bills and numerous businesses in Caribou and Bangor. Both were charged with Aggravated Forgery, a Class B felony.

Brydon was charged with Violation Of Conditional Release and was transported to the Aroostook County Jail. He is being held without bail pending his arraignment on August 4. Butler was released on $10,000 secured bail.

Caribou Police Officer Keith Ouellette is the primary investigator on the case and had assistance from the U.S. Secret Service Portland Office.
