Caribou B & B Celebrating 25 Years in Business

The Old Iron Inn Bed and Breakfast in Caribou is celebrating 25 years in business as of August 1, 2017.  This is a long tenure for a B&B to be run under one ownership, as the average life span is about 5 years.

Kate and Kevin McCartney bought the lovely old house on High Street during the scary dark days of Loring Air Force Base closure.  They are only the third owners of the Craftsman four-square house, built in 1913.  The Raymond family previously owned the house for almost 50 years, and members of that family often stay there when visiting northern Maine.

By 1992, the house had acquired a run-down outward appearance but the interior was in good condition and retained the original oak wainscoting.  The McCartneys replaced the cedar shingles of the house and garage, added 3 1/2 bathrooms and other modernizations, but took care to retain the original oak architecture.  In recent years, tin ceilings have been added to kitchen and living room areas.  The driveway, parking lot and gardens have also been improved.

The B&B is open throughout the year and takes particular pride in providing a high quality environment, freshly ironed bedding and excellent breakfasts.  The name of the inn derives from an extensive collection of antique laundry irons and iron related ephemera that is displayed throughout the house.  The house is furnished with a collection of fine mostly Victoria-age oak furniture.  There are also extensive collections of books and magazines, which are available for guests.
