Police in Waldoboro, Maine are investigating how an SUV landed upside down in a river in a crash that left a woman dead.

Waldoboro Police said that a passerby spotted the SUV on its roof in the Medomak River early Sunday along Route 1 near the Hannaford supermarket. The victim was identified as 48-year-old Melissa Sawyer, who had been secretary at the local school for years. Police say it appears she lost control of her vehiclel and crashed through the guardrail.

The crash was discovered around 7 a.m., but police say they don't know how long the vehicle was in the river. The investigation continues
