Canadian officials are warning citizens about a recent phone scam that is becoming problematic across many provinces.

According to reports, there have been a number of calls made to unsuspecting citizens from swindle artists claiming to be representatives of the Canadian Border Services Agency. The goal of these callers appears to be to collect an individual’s personal and financial information.

However, a news release states that it is not CBSA protocol to contact people for their financial information - so don't give your information out to anyone claiming to be CBSA.

"The BIS call center is a free information service for general enquiries regarding CBSA procedures, programs and services. This unit is not designed nor is it mandated to make phone calls requesting personal information or payment over the phone," according to the release.

Citizens that receive this type of call should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre immediately.
