There’s no more thrilling scandal than a sports scandal, and the 1994 Detroit Figure Skating Championships attack on Nancy Kerrigan, in which fellow skater Tonya Harding was allegedly involved, if finally getting the big screen treatment, courtesy of Margot Robbie. Robbie, who will be playing the infamous Harding in I, Tonya, has found her match in Paper Towns actress Caitlin Carver, who will play Kerrigan.

Carver, according to Deadline, will join Robbie, Sebastian StanAllison Janney, Julianne Nicholson, and Paul Walter Hauser in the movie, as well as Designated Survivor’s McKenna Grace as young Tonya, and Bojana Novakovich (Drag Me to Hell, Shameless) as Harding’s second coach Doddie Teachman. The film will follow Harding’s life as a figure skater leading up to her involvement in the 1994 scandal.

The subsequent trial after the event found that Harding’s ex boyfriend and her bodyguard hired hitman Shane Stant to break one of Kerrigan’s legs to prevent her from competing in the Detroit Championships. After one of her practice sessions, Stant hit her in the leg with a baton, above her knee, but only bruised it. She recovered and was chosen alongside Harding for the U.S. team at the Lillehammer Olympics, at which she won a silver medal. Harding placed eighth.

Carver doesn’t look especially like Kerrigan, but, then again, Robbie doesn’t look much like Tonya Harding, and she’s already gone through an astounding transformation to look the part. All in all, this is shaping up to be an exciting film about two of our country’s most fascinating athletes. I, Tonya doesn’t yet have an official release date, but it’s expected for sometime in 2018.
