It's a bedrock of Italian peasant cuisine, but when served by one of rock's biggest stars, it can cost a fortune. Last night, Bruce Springsteen raised $600,000 for wounded veterans and their families, thanks to a prize package that included a lasagna dinner at his house.

At the eighth annual Stand Up For Heroes benefit concert, which raises money for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, Springsteen, as he has done every year since the show's 2007 inception, was the star attraction of the event that brings together musicians and comedians. He told some dirty jokes, played some songs and, most importantly, offered up a set of items for auction.

Beginning with the the Fender Telecaster he was playing during the auction, Springsteen kept sweetening the pot every time the bidding slowed. He eventually added a one-hour guitar lesson, a ride around the block in the sidecar of his motorcycle, the shirt he was wearing and the aforementioned dinner. When it stalled at $260,000, one of the two leading bidders proposed the notion of them both winning if they each paid $300,000. All parties agreed, bringing the total to $600,000.

In February 2013, Springsteen put a near-identical package up for auction at the annual MusiCares Person of the Year award event and raised $250,000.

Rolling Stone reports that his five-song acoustic set consisted of 'Working on the Highway,' 'Growin' Up,' 'If I Should Fall Behind' -- a duet with his wife, Patti Scialfa -- 'Born in the U.S.A.' and 'Dancing in the Dark.' During the last number, comedian Louis C.K., who performed earlier in the evening, was spotted dancing like Courtney Cox.

After last night's show, Scialfa uploaded a brief video of the two of them rehearsing 'If I Should Fall Behind' backstage to her Instagram account.
