Watch Debbie Harry and Joan Jett as News Anchors in Blondie’s ‘Doom or Destiny’ Video

The world’s seemingly continuous state of turmoil can be made more palatable if you have Debbie Harry and Joan Jett bringing you the nightly news. At least that’s the impression we get from the new video for “Doom or Destiny,” a track from Blondie‘s most recent album, Pollinator.

In the clip, which you can watch above, the two stars sit behind a desk as they preside over a day’s worth of news. A weather report predicts an “asteroid impact,” “seven plagues” and “thermonuclear war.” There’s a distinctly feminist vibe to the video, with a red stiletto heel grinding out the word “patriarchy” and a headline declaring “Nasty Women Save the Planet.”

Elsewhere, there are infomercials featuring deals on gas masks and fortune telling, a sock puppet shouting “fake news!” is made to look like President Donald Trump and women clad head-to-toe in spandex do the “Punch a Nazi Dance.” Blondie even poke fun at their past with a reference to their hit “Rapture” in a headline that reports “Man From Mars Through With Cars and Bars.” (But it doesn’t say if now he only eats guitars.)

The video debuted at Vice’s I-D, where Harry called it the “most openly political video Blondie has ever done.” Guitarist Chris Stein noted that “in trying times, we try harder,” and added that “politics have become the new pop culture phenomena.”

Released earlier this year, Pollinator featured contributions from Johnny Marr, TV on the Radio‘s Dave Sitek, Nick Valensi of the Strokes, Sia and Charli XCX, in addition to Jett. “Their material is part of us and we are part of them,” Harry said at the time. “It’s a celebration of recycling!”
