The Kennebec Journal reports the scammers are calling people and saying they're with the Kennebec County Sheriff's Office.

Police say on their Facebook page don't call the swindlers back or try to send them money.

Officials say people who miss jury duty typically receive another order to appear. They say warrants for failing to appear can be issued but are somewhat rare. The courts don't ask for payments over the phone.

Augusta police say residents should also ignore a separate scam involving callers purporting to be with IRS agents who are demanding payment.
