The Man Behind the Cat: Celebrating Otto Messmer
Otto Messmer will be forever associated with one character, and it's a character he didn't even get credit for creating until years after the fact.
Messmer was born in Union City, New Jersey (then called West Hoboken) on August 16, 1892. As a student at the Thomas School of Art in New York City from 1911–1913, he provided illustrations for fashion catalogs as part of a work-study program with the Acme Agency. But what he really wanted to do was get into the relatively new artform of animation. He was fascinated by early cartoons like Winsor McCay's How a Mosquito Operates, and was already drawing his own comics for local papers by the age of 20.

The main cover is by Juan Gimenez, and looks like it could be the poster for a Darth Vader movie. Adi Granov offers a similarly cinematic cover, which also features Doctor Aphra, BT-1, and 0-0-0, the supporting cast of the series. They appear on a few of the other covers, while the rest focus on the Dark Lord of the Sith himself.

Parties Weren’t Meant to Last: Artists Pay Tribute to Prince
The world was stunned last Thursday by the unexpected death of Prince Rogers Nelson, known to the world simply as Prince. Prince was a legendary musician, whose records crossed all boundaries of style and genre. He was widely considered one of the best guitarists who ever lived. He was equally unparalleled as a singer, songwriter, and live performer.
But he was also a visual icon. In his music videos, live concerts, and movies like Purple Rain, his flair for style and unique androgynous look caught the eye of fans regardless of gender or sexuality. Upon his death, people praised his music of course, but there were also discussions about him as a role model who showed that there was no right way to be a man. Prince was an inspiration to everyone who refused to be bound in by labels and social roles.
