Comic-Con 2017 Unveils Thursday Schedule With 20th Century Fox, a Big Netflix Surprise and More
San Diego Comic-Con, like life, comes at you fast. With just a couple of short weeks until SDCC 2017, the first panel and scheduling announcements have started to roll in — including, wonder of all wonders, a Twin Peaks panel in Hall H (unfortunately, David Lynch will not be giving us the mystifying pleasure of experiencing “David Lynch at Comic-Con”). Following that wild announcement, SDCC has unveiled their official Thursday film lineup, which includes panels from 20th Century Fox (hello, Deadpool!), the DCU and Netflix.
Iron Man Shows Off Some New Armor in ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Set Photos
There are a few things you can always count on in a Marvel movie: Post-credits scenes, superheroes played by handsome men named Chris, and, if Tony Stark’s involved, you know he’s going to be sporting some new Iron Man armor. And thanks to a fresh batch of set photos, you don’t have to wait until Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters in 2018 to check out Stark’s sleek and shiny new upgrade.
‘Godzilla’ Sequel Begins Production With Monstrous New Plot Details
Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially announced the start of production on their new Godzilla sequel, with Krampus director Michael Dougherty at the helm of the film that brings us one step closer to an epic crossover with Kong. Although the previously revealed title — Godzilla: King of the Monsters — is curiously absent from this morning’s announcement, it does offer some intriguing new plot details…including which classic monsters we can expect to see in the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 blockbuster.
Watch Josh Brolin Get Ripped for Cable in ‘Deadpool 2’
After months of rumors, shortlists and speculation, Josh Brolin seemingly swooped in from out of left field to take the role of Cable in Deadpool 2. He’s definitely got that gruff attitude on lock, which should make him the perfect foil for Ryan Reynolds’ Merc With a Mouth, but there’s still quite a bit of work to be done to get Brolin ready for the highly-anticipated sequel. Judging by his Instagram posts, the transformation has officially begun.
Final ‘Cars 3’ Trailer Teases Lightning McQueen’s Last Chance
While Pixar’s animated world of anthropomorphic automobiles may very well continue on past Cars 3, there’s a whole lot of finality going on in the final trailer for Pixar’s latest chapter in the racing saga. “One new turn…One more dream…One last chance” reads the title cards in the new trailer for the sequel, in which Owen Wilson’s Lightning McQueen suffers a crippling accident that threatens to end his career. I swear this movie is still totally for kids.
Sony’s ‘Clean Version’ Initiative to Make Films Like ‘Step Brothers’ and ‘Captain Phillips’ Safe for Your Kids
Has this ever happened to you? Your kid is browsing the ol’ digital video library for something fun to watch when they settle on Captain Phillips, that contemporary Tom Hanks feel good classic. Unfortunately, it has some “mature content,” like a handful of swears and intense moments, and you don’t even want to think about what Paul Greengrass’ camerawork is going to do to that kid. Lucky for you, Sony’s “Clean Version” initiative is here to sanitize all that questionable content, making several movies in their library fun for the whole family.
Stephen King Reveals His Favorite Easter Egg in ‘The Dark Tower’
It doesn’t take a Stephen King super-fan to spot the two major easter eggs in the first trailer for The Dark Tower, but as Constant Readers (King’s nickname for his loyal fanbase) can tell you, that’s probably just the tip of the iceberg. King’s epic novel series is, among other things, a riveting piece of meta-fiction that ties all of his works (and worlds) together, so it’s inevitable that this summer’s highly-anticipated film adaptation will have more than a few easter eggs for casual fans and Constant Readers alike to discover — and King himself is giving you a head start.
‘The Angry Birds Movie 2’ Will Officially Smash Into Theaters in 2019
Following a successful collaboration on last year’s The Angry Birds Movie, Sony and Rovio are teaming up for another animated avian outing — that’s not really surprising, since the first film was a fairly big hit at the box office, making it a matter of when, not if, a sequel would happen. That sequel will now officially arrive in 2019, which also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the popular mobile game.
Tom Hardy Is ‘Venom’ in Spider-Man Villain Film From ‘Zombieland’ Director
In news that clearly came from the farthest depths of left field, Tom Hardy has been cast as the lead in Venom, Sony’s upcoming film about the famous Spider-Man villain. That’s not all: Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer will direct the movie, which is reportedly not a spinoff from Spider-Man: Homecoming, but a standalone project of sorts. Oh, and that’s still not all: Sony has shared an official announcement photo featuring Hardy in one of his classic Hardy-selfie poses, sporting a Venom t-shirt — in case you missed the point.
David Ayer Might Direct That New ‘Scarface’ Movie
A new Scarface remake doesn’t sound all that exciting, but a new Scarface remake directed by Antoine Fuqua — now that had some potential, especially with Diego Luna in the title role. You could easily envision Fuqua’s take on the iconic gangster story (which famously served as the basis for two classic films), and at the very least, it would be a good-looking, fairly entertaining film. Unfortunately, Fuqua dropped out of the project a while back, and we’re a little skeptical about his potential replacement.
