From the Desk of: Gary Marquis Caribou Parks & Recreation Dept. 55 Bennett Drive Caribou, Me. 04736 207-493-4224.
THE COUNTY IS GOING TO BE THE PLACE THIS WEEKEND AS HALF A FOOT OF SNOW TO A FOOT IN A HALF HAS BEEN REPORTED IN PARTS OF THE AREA.
We are back into the swing of things throughout the majority of the County, with this week’s snow and cold temps this should set us up for some nice trails. There are still a few areas that did not get much for snow so please be careful if out in these sections.
Remember that this is Can-Am Sled dog weekend in Fort Kent, the dog teams will be using small sections of our ITS trail system. ITS 92/85 and Carr Pond trails will be used, they are marked with green signs and volunteers on the trails. The trails are still open to snowmobiles so please use caution when approaching a dog team.
Remember that the Central area of the County was down for a week or so due to icy conditions, the ice is still there underneath the new snow. If the trails get a lot of traffic the turns will get cleared off of snow until the trails get groomed again so please keep this in mind and ride right.
CAUTION: RIVER CROSSING IN THE FORT FAIRFIELD AREA IS NOT ADVISED DUE TO UNSAFE ICE CONDITIONS ON THE AROOSTOOK. MADAWASKA RIVER AS WELL IS UNSAFE.
ITS 92 This trail leaving Fort Kent and going to Allagash is in great condition. The sled dog race uses a section of this trail leaving Fort Kent, very well marked and volunteers on the trail. While you are out on this trail check out the glazier lake loop trail which is in fantastic shape.
ITS 120 Also known as the Deboullie Trail is groomed and in very good condition, remember to get gas out of Portage, Eagle Lake, or at St. Francis. Stop by Deboullie pond for great pictures.
ITS 83 Presque Isle North this trail will be in very good condition. There is a small water hole behind the old MDOT garage in Axle siding, with the cold temps this area should be safe.
ITS 81 Fort Fairfield, Limestone, Caswell, Van Buren, Grand Isle, and Madawaska are reporting there sections to be in good to great shape, there is still a logging operation near Cyr cove watch for signs.
ITS 85 From the rooftop of the County to Ashland this trail is in great shape, the farther South you go there will be patches of ice, clubs are out trying to take care of this. Ashland is reporting that they will head down to Masardis on Thursday and should be in good shape
ITS 105 This trail is setting up in very good shape and as you go north the better the snow cover.
ITS 88 Ashland, Aroostook River will be out on their sections, Fort Fairfield will attempt to be out on Friday.
The information in this report is only as good as the sources that report it. The purpose of the report is to help snowmobilers make decisions about their trips and to insure their safety. The report will be expanded as sources provide information..........accurate info that is.
