Two people were taken to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a head-on collision on Route 1 south of Presque Isle.

The crash happened shortly after noontime, according to the Presque Isle Police Department.

Police say 20-year-old Brandon Anthony of Mars Hill was heading south on the Houlton Road when his 2008 Ford Taurus collided head on with a 2012 Toyota Camry driven by 37-year-old Michele Kenney of Houlton.

Both drivers were transported by Crown Ambulance to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle with undetermined injuries. Maine State Police and the Presque Isle Fire Department also responded to the accident just south of the train overpass.

Route 1 just south of Presque Isle was closed for a  time and then reduced to one lane until the accident scene was finally cleared by mid-afternoon.   Both vehicles were destroyed and were towed from the scene.

Police say the cause of the crash remains under investigation.  It was snowing at the time and roads were slippery .
