An 8-year-old boy died and a 5-year-old boy and two men were seriously injured Saturday in a head-on collision on Route 2 in Rumford.

8-Year-Old Died and 5-Year-Old Injured in head-On Collision in Maine

The Rumford Police Department said “all four individuals involved in the crash had sustained serious, potentially life-threatening injuries.”

People Entrapped in Vehicles

The crash happened around 3:13 pm near the McDonald’s. Airbags were deployed in the crash and several people were entrapped, said officials.

Game Warden and Nurse on the Scene

A Game warden and nurse were in the area and “ran up to the cars to render aid and found an unresponsive 8 year old boy and immediately began life-saving measures,” said police.

Four People with Serious Injuries

All four people involved in the collision were taken by ambulance to the Rumford Hospital.

8-Year-Old Died from Injuries

“Despite life-saving efforts on scene and at the hospital, the 8-year old passenger died from his injuries,” said Rumford PD.

5-Year-Old had Life Threatening Injuries

The 5-year-old boy had life-threatening injuries and was later transported to a Portland hospital for additional emergency treatment.

Head-On Collision

The crash happened when 42-year-old Mathew Kellogg was driving a 2016 Subaru Impreza east on Route 2 with “his two children passengers, an 8-year old male and 5-year old male,” said police. The Subaru and a 2005 Volvo-80 driven by F. Michael Piveronas of Rumford hit head-on. There were no other passengers in the Volvo.

Police said “Alcohol is a Suspected Factor”

“Alcohol is suspected of being a contributing factor in the crash,” said the Rumford Police Department.

Ongoing Investigation

Route 2 was closed and reopened around 6:20 pm. The crash is under investigation.
