This is the first year the mosquito-borne disease has been detected in the state. State epidemiologist Siiri Bennett says it's not clear that the virus is becoming more common or if it's being detected through better testing.

Maine Public reports Bennett is advising residents to take precautions such as wearing long sleeves and pants and wearing insect repellent. They should also eliminate standing water from their properties.

Jamestown Canyon is an arboviral disease, which is the same class of diseases as West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Jamestown Canyon can cause flu-like symptoms, meningitis and encephalitis.
