A 19-year-old former Dirigo High School student, Griffyn Smith, was killed Thursday night in a car crash in Weld, Maine. Smith graduated from the school in 2016.

Two current students were injured in the crash. Police said speed apears to be a likely cause of the accident as the 2005 Toyota Corolla went out of control, struck a tree, and overturned.

The driver, 18-year-old Ethyn Buotte of Dixfield, and a 17-year-old girl - whose name was not immediately available - are being treated at the Rumford hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers were assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies, the Weld Fire Department, and the district attorney’s office was also consulted.

Police are continuing the investigation.
