With the Red Sox pitching staff continuing to struggle, the team fired pitching coach Juan Nieves Thursday afternoon.Nieves was hired as the Sox pitching coach when John Farrell took over the team and in his first season the staff set a new franchise record for strikeouts with 1,294.

Through 28 games this season the team has an ERA of 4.86 while the ERA of the starting rotation is 5.54. No replacement has been named for Nieves but the team is headed out for a 10 game road trip that starts Friday in Toronto before going out to the west coast.

The team also parted ways with reliever Edward Mujica by designating him for assignment. Mujica is 1-1 this season with an ERA of 4.61 in just 13.2 innings of work.
