It’s not often we catch a glimpse of rock and metal history unfurling before our very eyes, but thankfully, cameras have been present when we as individuals haven’t been. Check out these 10 Epic Final Performances from rock and metal legends!

An artist’s final performance isn’t always announced ahead of time. Tragedy can sometimes be the catalyst that turns just another night into a final chapter. Nirvana fans in Munich, Germany, on the night of March 1, 1994 didn’t know they were witnessing the final performance of Kurt Cobain. The grunge legend would take his own life just a month later on April 5.

Over 20 years later, fans in Berlin would witness Lemmy Kilmister and Motorhead’s final concert of the band’s four-decade career. Dec. 11, 2015 was the night Lemmy took his last bow, succumbing less than three weeks later while suffering from cancer and heart conditions.

Some final performances come on an artist’s own terms. Black Sabbath’s final gig took place in the heavy metal blueprinters’ home town of Birmingham, England. Before 15,700 people in the Genting Arena, Black Sabbath said goodbye on Feb. 4, 2017 with a set of fan favorites from the 1970s. “The End” for Sabbath was truly bittersweet.
